ULYSSES EPISODE 11: SIRENS

“ENDLESS” x 2.5 IN.

Typography.

The text for this project is the first 63 lines of the “Sirens” episode in James Joyce’s Ulysses. This hodgepodge of nonsense words is a prelude created by the sounds and conversations that occur throughout the rest of the episode. These lines are typset on an infinitely-looping Möbius strip to emphasize how the word ‘Begin!’ is the last word of Joyce’s prelude, but the beginning of the rest of the episode. The typography is inspired by how Joyce composed these lines as a musical score to place the reader in the aural environment of a noisy bar. Five lines of type suggest a staff and the curved lines connecting phrases imply musical ties and slurs.
