The Architecture of Health

Book Design
2021

While combating the COVID-19 pandemic, society questioned the role buildings play in supporting (or undermining) our public health. The Architecture of Health, authored by Michael P. Murphy, Founding Principal and Executive Director of MASS Design Group, along with Design Director Jeffrey Mansfield, explores these inquiries by unearthing how hospital design has responded to crises and innovation in healthcare over time.

Span worked with MASS and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum to design a book that incorporates historical images as footnotes to the text. The chapters are punctuated by photo spreads that showcase detailed architectural plans from the birth of the hospital into the present day.
